Boccaccio 70 is an Italian episodic film from the year 1962 by the directors Mario Monicelli , Federico Fellini , Luchino Visconti and Vittorio De Sica on an idea by Cesare Zavattini . The film is an anthology in four episodes, one per director, each dealing with a different aspect of morality and love in modern times in the style of Giovanni Boccaccio .

The four original episodes were:

  • Renzo e Luciana (Mario Monicelli)
  • La tentazione del dottor Antonio (Federico Fellini)
  • Il lavoro (Luchino Visconti)
  • La riffa (Vittorio De Sica)

The first episode of Monicelli was only available in the Italian distribution of the film. In solidarity with Monicelli, the other three directors did not appear at the Cannes Film Festival to present their film.

Content I: Renzo e Luciana (Renzo and Luciana)

In Renzo e Luciana, a young couple tries to hide their marriage and the alleged pregnancy from their employer's draconian accountant. This prohibited all employees from having relationships with one another. They do not have an apartment and sometimes meet in remote rooms of the factory. The strict accountant, however, is not averse to cheap adventures at the expense of the female employees.

Content II: Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio (The Temptation)

In Fellini's episode, Peppino De Filippo plays the uptight moral guardian Dr. Antonio Mazzuolo, who is increasingly crazy about an advertising wall in front of his apartment on which a luscious Anita Ekberg advertises milk. Ekberg appears to him several times a. a. as a giantess who chases him in Rome at night and catches him by hand in one turn of the King-Kong constellation. Mazzuolo is torn between moral indignation, disgust and love for her. The following morning, completely confused, the fire brigade took him down from the advertising scaffolding and took him away in an ambulance.

Content III: Lavoro (The Job)

In Visconti's episode film, Romy Schneider plays a young countess who discovers that her husband regularly visits luxury call girls. She explains to him that she is tired of the useless life and wants to look for a job too. However, since she has not learned anything, the only option is to give herself to him for a fee. He accepts the suggestion.

Content IV: La riffa (The main prize)

Sophia Loren plays Zoe, an attractive shooting gallery owner who, due to financial difficulties, offers herself first prize in a lottery with 70 tickets. The winner can spend one night with her. The prices for the lots rise to unimagined heights. But then she falls in love with the jealous Gaetano.

Reviews

"The film, which is consistently impressive in terms of design, was shortened to 190 minutes by the Italian distributor and then again greatly reduced by the German distributor."
