The GR 5 is a transnational long-distance hiking trail . It is the continental part of the E2 European long-distance hiking trail, which begins in the British Isles, and leads from the North Sea over around 2080 km to the Mediterranean .

designation

The name GR (= Sentier de Grande Randonnée ) can be traced back to the fact that the route mainly runs through France (where it is one of the longest national routes) and is best known through the initiative of the Fédération française de la randonnée pédestre .

The longest variant of the GR 5 begins on the Dutch coast in Hook of Holland and leads on the Deltapad to Bergen op Zoom ; other sources only let the GR 5 begin there, in Bergen. The GR 5 leads to Belgium and runs east through Flanders to the Belgian province of Limburg . At Sint Pietersberg near Maastricht , it touches the southern end point of the longest Dutch long-distance hiking trail, the Pieterpad . There the GR 5 turns south and crosses the Belgian Ardennes for over 200 km . It runs through Luxembourg , the Vosges and the Sundgau .

The GR 5 leads south of Belfort into the Jura ; there it partly runs together with the Grande Traversée du Jura and in winter can also be done on cross-country skis or snowshoes. The path descends from the Jura to Lake Geneva , which is crossed by boat from Nyon to Thonon-les-Bains or Saint-Gingolph VS.

The most famous section of the GR 5, the Grande Traversée des Alpes , begins on the south bank of Lake Geneva and leads over 660 km through the Western Alps ( Mont Blanc group , Graian Alps , Cottian Alps and Maritime Alps ), through lonely valleys and nature parks to Nice . Parts of this route are also used by the newer, alpine-wide route network Via Alpina . From the Maritime Alps to the Mediterranean, many hikers prefer the GR 52 from Saint-Dalmas de Valdeblore to Menton .
