Giuseppe Canali (also Giovanni Giuseppe Canali ; born June 22, 1781 in Cesano di Porto , † January 1, 1851 in Ferentino ) was an Italian clergyman and curia bishop .

Life

Born the son of Basilio Canali and his wife Innocenza Mignocco, he attended the Collegio Romano . In 1802 he entered the service of the Apostolic Penitentiary, where he held lower-ranking positions for a long time. The ordination received Giuseppe Canali in 1804 by the Kardinalgroßpönitentiar Leonardo Antonelli . During the French occupation of Rome, he was arrested in June 1812 for refusing to take the required oath and was deported first to Civitavecchia , then to Corneto and finally to Bastia in Corsica . From there he returned to Rome in May 1814. With his appointment as secretary of the Vicariate of Rome on August 27, 1829, he left the Apostolic Penitentiary. Pope Pius VIII made Giuseppe Canali his confessor .

Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on December 14, 1840 Bishop of Ferentino . He was ordained bishop on December 27, 1840 in Rome by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , Costantino Patrizi Naro ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Fabio Maria Asquini , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars, and the Papal Sacristan, Bishop Giuseppe Maria Castellani OESA . After only two years in this bishopric, Giuseppe Canali became a canon of the Lateran basilica and on January 24, 1842 titular archbishop of Colossae and vice-gentleman of Rome. On February 1, 1842, he became consultor of the Holy Office and on July 11, 1844, examiner of the bishops in canon law . Gregory XVI. On April 24, 1845, he was finally raised to the rank of (titular) Patriarch of Constantinople .

Giuseppe Canali died in Ferentino after a stroke and was buried in the local church of Santa Maria della Pace .

Works

As his memoir, he left behind the largely unprinted Memorie della mia vita . Part of it, the Memorie di quanto accade nel Tribunale della Penitenzieria durante la Dimora delle Armi Francesi nei Stati della Santa Sede , contain serious accusations against the work of the Apostolic Penitentiary during the French occupation, which historians consider to be inconsistent become.
