Stained Glass Window from St. Laurentius (Ahrweiler)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stained glass windows of St. Laurentius are leaded glass windows in the Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius in Ahrweiler , a district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in northern Rhineland-Palatinate . They were all created in the 20th century.

history

The church leader of St. Laurentius writes: "The oldest church windows were dated 1300, but they were probably made around 1240 in the workshops of St. Kunibert in Cologne." After the church fire in 1809, the heavily damaged windows were removed and sold. They came to the USA through the art trade . These windows showed scenes from the life of St. Lawrence , the patron saint of the church , in the form of round pictures ( tondo ) .

The windows installed in the 19th and early 20th centuries - with the exception of the windows in the north choir and the neighboring Holy Trinity window - were destroyed by the effects of war during the Second World War . From 1953, first the windows in the main choir and then all the others until 1962 were given new glazing. The new windows were not implemented according to an overall concept, but rather designed by various artists, according to whose boxes the glass paintings involved carried out the work.

Window in the north side choir

The oldest windows in the church are in the north side choir. They were created after 1900 and formed a unit with those of the southern side choir opposite. They showed eight saints , of which only the saints Albertus , Jakobus , Josef and Michael have been preserved in the north side choir. The Michael Window, also known as the War Window , is dedicated to the fallen of the First World War .

Trinity Window

The Trinity window in the north nave from 1904 shows the Trinity in the middle . In the middle you can see Christ in a mandorla , who holds the globe in his left hand and blesses it with his right hand . God the Father can be seen above the crowned Christ and in between, at the heart of the Father, a dove unfolds its wings as a symbol of the Holy Spirit . In the left lancet window you can see St. Matthias , the patron saint of the Diocese of Trier , and in the right lancet window St. Margareta . Below Christ is Maria with the child and a lily, to the right of her Saint Barbara and to her left Elisabeth of Thuringia with a child and another unknown saint.

Window in the main choir

Central window

The windows in the main choir were created in 1953 by the Binsfeld glass painting company based on designs by the Trier artist Rudolf Schillings (1925–2003) . The three 11.50 m high windows, with a total area of 70 m², deal with the topic of Jesus Christ's work of redemption and our participation in his fruits . The middle window is dominated by the crucifixion group; to the right of the crucified one stand Mary and the apostle John and to the left the Roman soldier Longinus , who is said to have stabbed Jesus in the side after his death. Mary Magdalene holds Jesus' feet entwined. The scenes below the crucifixion show the Lord's Supper with Judas Iscariot on the right outer edge of the picture, the Annunciation to Mary and the birth of the Lord , including the sacrifice of Abraham and the sacrifice of Melchizedech and the lower end form the depiction of Saints Laurentius, Joseph, Matthias and Sebastian in life size. The upper end of the middle choir window is the representation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary .

Left choir window

The left choir window shows in the center the miracle of the multiplication of bread . Above it, the Manna rain is depicted and below the central scene, Saint Elizabeth distributes bread to the poor. The lower part of the window contains a scene from purgatory , St. Martin sharing his cloak, and other small depictions.

Right choir window

The main image of the right choir window is Christ in the wine press . Above it, the spies in the promised land are depicted. Many scenes from the winemaker's work in the vineyard are shown on this window. In the lowest part on the far left, Pope Urban I , the patron saint of winemakers, is depicted and next to him winemakers harvesting grapes.

Round window under the galleries

The round windows, also known as tondi , on the side walls of the nave below the galleries were made in 1956 according to designs by Rudolf Schillings. They show the saints Christophorus , Michael , Heinrich , Theodor and Agnes .

Hat window

The four hat windows on the gallery, made in 1957 according to designs by the artist Jakob Schwarzkopf , depict the patronesses of the four hats in Ahrweiler: Saint Barbara (patroness of the Ahrhut), Saint Ursula (patroness of the upper hat), and Saint Catherine (patroness of the Niederhut) and St. Mary (patroness of the Adenbachhut). The respective city gates of Ahrweiler are depicted above the saint: Ahrtor, Obertor, Niedertor and Adenbachtor.

Francis Window

The St. Francis window on the southern gallery was installed in 1959 and made by Rudolf Schillings from a cardboard box . It shows St. Francis preaching to animals. The animals listen to him: the pelican tears its beak open, the deer turn their heads towards him and the peacock stands attentively by it.

Christmas window

Maria as Queen (southern side choir)

In 1956, a so-called Christmas window was installed on the south side of the church, showing the Holy Family . Maria kneels next to the newborn son, who looks at the viewer from bed on straw. Behind it stands Joseph with a staff to protect those entrusted to him. The scales above the person are the sign of justice and divine truth. The chalice next to it recalls Jesus' prayer in the garden of Gethsemani : "Father ... let this chalice pass me by" (cf. Matthew 26: 36-56 EU ).

South side choir windows

The south side choir windows were created in 1956 and depict Mary in the phases of her life: the Virgin Mary, Mother Mary, Mary as Pietà and Mary as Queen.
