Venier studied organ and composition at the Udine Conservatory until 1985 . He then took private lessons from the pianist Franco D'Andrea and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1990 . He has been leading his own bands since 1990, and in 1991 he released his first album Finlandia . He has also worked with musicians such as Enrico Rava , Lee Konitz , Kenny Wheeler , Joey Baron , Nguyên Lê , Gabriele Mirabassi , Massimo Urbani , Maria Pia De Vito , Valery Ponomarev , George Garzone , Hal Crook , Stefano Di Battista , Flavio Boltro and Paolo Fresu .

In 1996 Venier met the clarinetist Klaus Gesing in the south of France , with whom he recorded several CDs. With Gensing and the singer Norma Winstone he founded a trio whose first album Chamber Music was released in 2003; the following album Distances (2008) was nominated for a Grammy in 2009.

With the WDR Big Band and the WDR Radio Orchestra as well as Gianluigi Trovesi and Diana Torto , he performed Antiche Danze & Canti Italiani in 2011 , a homage to the traditional music of his home region of Friuli (in arrangements by Michael Abene and Michele Corcella ). Some of these arrangements were performed again (with local orchestras and international soloists) as simphonica at the opening of the Mittelfest 2012 in the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine (album 2014). Venier's first solo album was released in 2016 on ECM Records .

Venier teaches at the conservatory in his native Udine.
