The globe-Verlag was the existing 1945-1993 party publisher of the Austrian Communist Party . Since setting up as an independent company, individual publications in the KPÖ environment continued to appear under the remaining publisher's name.

History of the publisher

After the liberation in 1945, the KPÖ initially assumed an important position as one of the three founding parties of the Second Republic with corresponding representation in the first provisional government . It was thanks to this status and its proximity to the Soviet occupying power that the KPÖ was able to take over the modern printing operations of the "Ostmärkische Zeitungsverlag" on a lease basis in 1945, which the latter had taken over from the Steyrermühl concern in 1938 through " Aryanization " . The Globus Group, which was officially founded in the summer of 1945 and published and printed numerous magazines related to the KPÖ, established itself in the corresponding premises.

Due to the restitution to Steyrermühl that was ultimately necessary, Globus-Verlag built a large, modern printing and publishing building based on the designs of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky , Wilhelm Schütte , on Höchstädtplatz 3 in Vienna- Brigittenau (20th district) in 1954–1956 . Fritz Weber and Karl Franz Eder. (It was in the Soviet sector of Vienna until 1955.) Until 1992 it was the seat of the KPÖ and some of its sub-organizations. The daily newspaper Volksstimme , the central organ of the KPÖ, had its editorial office on the 4th floor.

Today the building is used as a school building. In front of the building, on Höchstädtplatz, is the memorial and memorial stone Marsyas by Alfred Hrdlicka , which is dedicated to the victims and fighters against fascist tyranny, racism and war , donated by the KPÖ and erected in 1988. There is also a relief bust on a stone plinth in memory of the long-time KPÖ chairman Johann Koplenig .

As a party publisher, the publishing house shared the fate of the KPÖ, the path towards extensive marginalization. Nevertheless, the intellectuals working in it, with their emphatically Austrian-patriotic line, succeeded in repeatedly setting interesting and important cultural accents, especially in the early years after 1945. The care of the work of the poet Theodor Kramer is one of the services of the publishing house, and important authors such as Mira Lobe and Karl Bruckner were at least temporarily active in the field of children's and youth literature as well .

Bookstores

The publishing house owned and operated five bookstores in Austria for decades, four of them in Vienna, three of them in the city center. These bookstores offered a wide range of classic and current literature, especially from the publishing programs of the socialist countries, especially the GDR. In the early 1980s, five titles were also sold from the famous Insel-Bücherei , published by the Leipziger Insel-Verlag , but with their own cover and imprint.

The "Zentralbuchhandlung", which was owned by KPÖ until 2005, was the bookstore flagship of Globus Verlag and KPÖ in Vienna in the inner city next to Stephansplatz. The “International Book” at the Trattnerhof , also in the inner city, had books in Russian and Bulgarian in Cyrillic in its range . There was also the “Erste Wiener Fachbuchhandlung” in Vienna's Wollzeile (1st district), the “Arbeiterbuchhandlung” in Laxenburger Strasse in the Vienna workers' district of Favoriten (10th district) and the “Volksbuchhandlung” in Graz , the Styrian capital.
