The bell funkie ( Hosta ventricosa ) is a species of plant from the genus Funkien ( Hosta ) in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae).
features
The bell funkie is a perennial , herbaceous plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 60 to 100 centimeters. The leaves are broad, heart-shaped, leathery, more or less smooth, strikingly dark green and have a strong gloss on the underside. They measure 20 to 30 × 15 to 20 centimeters and have 7 to 9 pairs of lateral nerves. The petiole is winged, mottled below and up to 40 centimeters long.
There are 20 to 30 flowers . These are about 5.5 centimeters long, violet-blue and suddenly widen out of a slender tube like a bell.
The flowering time is in August.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60 or 120.
Occurrence
The bell funkia occurs in southern and central China from Sichuan , northern Guangxi and Yunnan to Henan and southern Shaanxi . It grows in shady and moist bushes on sandstone. In the south of the area it occurs at altitudes of 500 to 2400 meters. The species was naturalized in warm temperate to temperate North America .

The bell funkie is widely used as an ornamental plant. It has been in culture since 1790 at the latest. There are a few varieties including:
- 'Aureomaculata' - with yellow spotted leaves;
- 'Aureomarginata' - whose leaves have an irregular yellow margin.
