The Goldach is an 18.5 kilometer long tributary of Lake Constance in the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , St. Gallen and Thurgau in Switzerland .
River course
In its upper reaches, the Goldach is hidden in deep ravines and forests in many places , so that it is difficult to explore. Only at its lower course, after the Martinstobel, is it easier to see and the river is less wild.
The river rises in the border area between the municipality of Trogen (canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden) and the district of Oberegg (canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden) at around 1,060 meters above sea level near the Ruppenpass . Then it flows, fed by many streams, in a north-westerly direction to the former Bädli Trogen. From there on, the river continues to flow in a deep ravine . At the confluence with the Säglibach in Chastenloch, it forms the border between the municipality of Speicher and Rehetobel . From now on, the course of the river turns in a more northerly direction, past Zweibrücken (Rehetobel) , where the cantonal road Rehetobel - Speicherschwendi crosses the river, to Achmüli at 619 meters above sea level. From here on, the Goldach forms the cantonal border between St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden.
Now the river runs for about two kilometers in a westerly direction in a deep ravine, until the confluence with the Bernhardsbach, where the Goldach finally leaves the Appenzellerland and now forms the border between the city of St. Gallen and the municipality of Eggersriet . In front of the Martinstobel, the Rappenstein ruins are enthroned on the western side of the river . Above and below the Martinsbrücke, the ravine is again so deep that the Goldach is difficult to access. It flows further north after the Martinsbrücke.
At the confluence with the mountain stream, the ravine expands into the so-called Goldachtobel, which is wider and through which a hiking trail also leads. The whole ravine is still heavily forested. In this section the Goldach forms the municipal boundary of Untereggen and Mörschwil and later the municipalities of Goldach and Mörschwil. After Bluemenegg, the A1 motorway and then the Rorschach – St. Gallen the Goldach.
Now the ravine finally opens and the Goldach flows past the Bruggmühle in a north-easterly direction to Lake Constance . Shortly before the confluence, it forms the border to the municipality of Horn and thus to the canton of Thurgau.
