Lake in nature reserve in former. Lignite - opencast

The Goldbergsee even Ostheimer lake called, is a 0.165 square kilometers large lake in a former lignite - opencast and today's nature reserve at Ostheim in northern Hesse Schwalm-Eder-Kreis ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Goldbergsee is located in the northern foothills of the Knüllgebirge , the "Homberger Hochland", between the Malsfeld districts of Mosheim in the north-northwest, Ostheim in the north-northeast and Sipperhausen in the south-southeast and the Homberg district of Hombergshausen in the west and its hamlet Lengemannsau in the south-west. It is located about 1 km northeast of the summit of the Goldberg (about  385  m above sea  level ). The Rhünda flows through the valley east of the hill on which the Goldbergsee lies, and its tributary Hohlgraben runs to the west .

The lake is 0.165 km² and with a volume of around 1.8 million cubic meters, a maximum of around 20 m deep. It is around 600 m long and around 380 m wide. Its circumference is about 1.5 km.

Just a few meters northwest of the Goldbergsee, directly outside the nature reserve (see below), there is the approximately 4,000 m² "natural bathing lake Ostheim". It is part of an approximately 2 hectare leisure area.

The Goningshausen desert is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Goldberg .

description

Mining was carried out between Ostheim and Sipperhausen from 1840 to 1880, but this was discontinued due to a lack of sales. From 1972 to 1989 in the area of today's Goldbergsee in the Ostheim opencast mine of PreussenElektra around 7.3 million m³ of earth debris was moved on a total of about 46 hectares, from which almost 2.4 million m³ of lignite were extracted for the Borken power plant . After that, the lake was created in the abandoned and renatured open-cast mine. As part of the redevelopment measures, areas for agricultural use were also established.

Ostheim natural bathing lake

The lake is part of the nature reserve (NSG) Goldbergsee (NSG no. 163274), which in 1991 by the Upper nature conservation authority of the Government Presidium Kassel was expelled and about 36 ha (other claims to 37 ha) is great. The renaturation work ended in 1994. Nature is left to its own devices, and there is a natural growth of plants ( succession ) with numerous native plant communities . Many water and migratory birds as well as other native animal species use the lake and its surroundings as a breeding and resting place as well as a place of foraging. There are three swimming islands in the lake . Around it runs around the edge of the NSG, around 2.7 km long circular path, from which it is possible to observe natural areas and bodies of water. On this path there has been an observation hut with information boards standing between bushes and trees on the southern edge of the NSG in the Sipperhausen district since 2000.

The Goldbergsee is fed by underground springs and hillside springs of the Goldberg and continuously supplies the neighboring bathing lake with water through an overflow, and the bathing lake also has an overflow, so that there is a constant exchange of water between the two lakes. There is also an overflow from the bathing lake to the hollow ditch , which drains into the Rhünda. This exchange, and because there is only a small amount of sediments, nutrients and waste water brought in via the groundwater, ensures good water quality. The Hessian State Institute for Environmental downgraded the water quality in the water quality class  1 ( anthropogenic unloaded) a.

Transport links

The state road  3428 ( Sipperhausen - Ostheim ) runs a little east past the Goldbergsee, which leads through Ostheim and then meets the L 3224 ( Lengemannsau - Ostheim ), which runs a little to the west . The latter meets the federal motorway 7 northeast of the village at the nearby Malsfeld junction . A parking lot that can be reached from the L 3224 is located at the Ostheim natural swimming lake.
