Gottfried Franz
Gottfried Franz (born September 29, 1803 in Eufingen (today: Hünstelden ), † June 10, 1873 in Vienna ) was a Reformed pastor and from 1834 until his death superintendent of the Evangelical Church HB in Austria .
Life
Gottfried Franz was the son of a teacher and attended grammar school in Weilburg . From 1824 he studied philosophy and theology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , where Karl von Hase was currently working as a private lecturer, and with Johann Gottfried Eichhorn and Gottlieb Jakob Planck at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . During his studies in 1821 he became a member of the Germania Tübingen fraternity . He received practical training at the seminary in Herborn . He then worked as a candidate in the Duchy of Nassau .
On the recommendation of the theologian Ludwig Hüffell , Gottfried Franz became pastor in the Reformed City Church in Vienna in 1829 . Four years later he married Maria Feodora Plankensteiner from Vienna. Their son was the journalist and lawyer Rudolf von Franz . In 1838 Gottfried Franz succeeded Justus Hausknecht as the Reformed Superintendent and thus held the highest office in the Evangelical Church HB in Austria. In 1848 Franz played a major role in the Protestant church constitution in Austria.
The Protestant patent of 1861, which brought the Protestant churches in Austria almost equal legal status with the Roman Catholic Church , falls during his term of office. In the same year, Gottfried Franz was elected to the Lower Austrian state parliament for a legislative period , but later turned down a candidacy for the Reichsrat . In 1863 he received an honorary doctorate from the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Vienna .
At the first general synod of the Evangelical Church A. u. HB in 1864, Franz was appointed one of the two chairmen. The church constitution adopted at this synod with its presbyterial-synodal basic structure is also based on his proposals. Gottfried Franz was also involved in the establishment of an Austrian branch of the Gustav Adolf Foundation , which he chaired as chairman.
His successor as superintendent was Erhard Buschbeck . Gottfried Franz's grave is located at the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery (directly behind the church), which he campaigned for.
