Gottfried Richter (* 1640 ; † May 15, 1717 in Döbeln ) was a German organ builder of the 17th century.

life and work

Gottfried Richter was born as the son of the liege judge Johann Richter from Flöha . He obtained citizenship in Döbeln in 1666 and married the widow of the organ builder Car (o) l Müller. He was also city judge and mayor in Döbeln.

The oldest playable organ in Saxony comes from him . It is located in the Protestant church in Parthenstein - Pomßen and was built in 1671. The one-manual work originally had 12 registers . In 1727 the organ builder Johann George Gordt from Mittweida added an additional pedal register. Gottfried Hildebrand from Leipzig removed two registers in 1887 and renewed the keyboards. The Wegscheider organ workshop restored the instrument between 2004 and 2006 and brought it back to its original condition. Richter designed the five-part prospectus historically in the Renaissance style , which is why the organ was previously dated around 1600. The middle three long pipes are embossed and have twisted feet and gilded labia . The upper and lower labia of the prospect pipes have keel arches . The side wing doors are decorated with grisaille paintings. The original disposition has been handed down on Palm Sunday 1671 thanks to the “organ sermon” by the Pomßen pastor Immanuel Weber .

Gottfried Richter's brother George Richter worked partly with Gottfried and was partly self-employed. After Gottfried's death, George took over his workshop and continued it. He can be verified as an organ builder between 1694 and 1718.

Gottfried Richter's tombstone is placed at the St. Nikolai Church in Döbeln.
