Gottlieb (Amadeus) Count von Windisch-Graetz (Imperial Count since 1682) (born March 13, 1630 in Regensburg , † December 25, 1695 in Vienna ) was a politician and diplomat in the service of the Imperial Habsburgs .

family

Gottlieb (Amadeus) was the son of Bartholomäus von Windisch-Graetz . In 1662 he married his first wife Amalia Margaretha van Brederode (1630–1663). In 1665 he married Countess Maria Eleonora zu Oettingen-Oettingen (1649–1681). After her death in 1683 he married Countess Maria Theresia zu Saurau . From these marriages there were 13 children; one son was Ernst Friedrich von Windisch-Graetz .

Life

At the early age of 28, he became a member of the Reichshof Council . There he belonged as a Protestant to the evangelical curia of the court. He was also used on various occasions as a diplomat on various extraordinary missions. These included trips to Sweden (1663–1664), to various courts in Italy in 1661, to France in 1670, to Braunschweig , Denmark and Hamburg (1673–1674), and to The Hague (1691–1693). At the court of Louis XIV in particular, his energetic demeanor earned him respect. From 1683 to 1688 he was next to the Bishops of Passau and Eichstätt Principal Commissioner at the Reichstag in Regensburg.

In 1682 Windisch-Graetz had converted to Catholicism. He was also raised to the rank of Imperial Count. He thus had a seat on the Count's bench in the Reichstag. However, he did not succeed in actually gaining direct imperial rule. Hence his imperial estate was questioned. As a result, his position as Reichstag commissioner was disputed by the imperial estates, as this office was attached to the imperial estates.

Around 1693 he was appointed Reich Vice Chancellor.

Windisch-Graetz had been a member of the Fruit Bringing Society under the name of the Kühne since 1656 and was also active as a poet of sonnets and contemporary poems. His grave is in Vienna in the Schottenkirche .
