Gottlieb Gerhard Titius
Gottlieb Gerhard Titius (also: Tietz ; born June 5, 1661 in Nordhausen ; † April 10, 1714 in Leipzig ) was a German legal scholar.
Life
The son of the lawyer and Count Stollberg Chancellor Johann Titius (born March 21, 1615 in Quedlinburg, † October 29, 1678 in Nordhausen) had attended the school in his hometown and continued his training at the school in Aschersleben from 1678 . At Easter 1680 he moved to the University of Leipzig , where Gottlob Friedrich Seligmann (1654–1707), Valentin Alberti (1635–1697) and Jacob Thomasius (1622–1684) were his teachers. Since the plague broke out in Leipzig, he moved to the University of Rostock in September 1680 , where, in addition to his philosophical training, he concentrated on studying law.
Three and a half years later he returned to Leipzig, where he worked with Christian Thomasius , Jacob Born (the Elder) (1638–1709), Bartholomäus Leonhard Schwendendörffer (1631–1705), August Benedict Carpzov (1644–1708) and Gottfried Nikolaus Ittig (1645 –1710) continued his legal studies. In 1688 he received his doctorate in law, worked as a private lecturer and author of legal writings. He was very popular in his private lectures. His works were not insignificant at that time, especially in the field of systematisation of law. Since he could not find a supporter at the Saxon court as a representative of a more humane judiciary, he persevered in this activity. It was only after Christian Thomasius' intervention that the Saxon cabinet minister, Count Jacob Heinrich von Flemming (1667–1728), campaigned for him to be given a university post in Leipzig.
So he became on February 25, 1709 assessor at the law faculty and in 1710 professor of the Pandects . In the same year he became professor of the Code and in 1713 an assessor at the Leipzig Higher Court . After he was elected rector of the alma mater in the winter semester of 1713 , he died of overwork during his tenure. He was buried in the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig, with great sympathy from the Leipzig university teachers and students .
