Gottlieb Giese (born November 17, 1787 in Greifswald ; † April 3, 1838 there ; full name Gottlieb Christian Johannes Giese , also Christian Johann Gottlieb Giese ) was a German painter, architect and drawing teacher.

Life

Gottlieb Giese was a student of Johann Gottfried Quistorp and attended the Berlin Art Academy under Karl Friedrich Schinkel . According to his design, an octagonal chapel was built in the Greifswald old cemetery between 1821 and 1826 . Giese supervised the renovation of Greifswald Cathedral from 1824 to 1832 , during which the cabinet maker Johann Christian Adolf Friedrich (1779–1843), a brother of Caspar David Friedrich, made the woodwork. He took over the re-establishment of the St. Mary's Church , whose high altar was executed according to his design by Christian Friedrich 1835-1837 and furnished with the copy of the painting "Holy Night" by Corregio painted by Friedrich August von Klinkowström in 1807 .

The artistic estate of Giese was largely destroyed in a fire in 1871. There are several paintings in the gallery of the Pomeranian State Museum . A series of eight depictions of the life of Jesus Christ painted in 1822 for the St. Marien Church in Barth are in the church history collection of the Marienkirche. On the occasion of the re-inauguration of Greifswald Cathedral after the restoration carried out in the 1980s, an exhibition on Giese's work in the cathedral was held in 1989, showing all of the preserved paintings and several drawings.
