Gottlieb Welté , also: Christian Gottlieb Welté , (born December 3, 1748 or 1749 in Mainz ; † December 17, 1792 on the Lohu manor (German Loal ) in the parish of Hageri ( Haggers ), today the municipality of Kohila in the Rapla district , Estonia ) a German landscape painter and etcher .

Life

King David

Welté was initially a pupil of his father Anton Welté before he joined Christian Georg Schütz the Elder's workshop in Frankfurt am Main in the mid-1770s .

Welté worked as an etcher and landscape painter in Mainz and Frankfurt. In 1780 he went to Põltsamaa in Estonia, where he worked in the local castle and the local porcelain factory. He was later a tutor at Võisiku Manor near Põltsamaa from 1785 to 1788 and then lived in Lohu Manor, where he died in 1792.

His works, most of which he executed in small formats, are stylistically assigned to the Rococo and the transition to classicism . In Estonia he painted French-style staffage depicting Estonian peasants of his time against the backdrop of the surrounding landscapes. Welté was a typical representative of the Enlightenment - thoughtful, eager to experiment and non-conformist.

His most important work, an illusionistic fresco covering an area of 27.6 square meters, was only discovered in the 1960s behind wallpaper that was later applied in the hall of the Lohu manor.

After Welté had been forgotten for many years, a comprehensive exhibition took place for the first time in 2007/2008 in the Kadriorg Palace of the Eesti Kunstimuuseum in Tallinn , which was then shown in a similar form in the Landesmuseum Mainz in 2008 .
