Gröbern is a district of the municipality of Niederau in the district of Meißen . With 505 inhabitants, Gröbern is the third largest district in the Niederau community.
location
The street village of Gröbern is located about 4 km northeast of Meißen on the state road 177 to Radeburg on the northwest slope of the Elbe valley trench.
To the northeast is a large garbage dump, the Gröbern dump.
history
The place has a long history of settlement. Grave finds from the Bronze Age were discovered east and west of Gröbern. The associated settlement is believed to be at the southern end of the village. A burial ground from the earliest Iron Age near the village documents the prehistoric importance of the place.
The place was first mentioned in 1180. Over the centuries, more and more people settled around a church.
In the course of the Hussite Wars in the 15th century, Gröbern was destroyed and only existed as a desert site.
After the Reformation in 1590, the rebuilt village was placed under the Prokuraturamt Meißen.
A plague epidemic occurred in Gröbern between 1634 and 1637 and 178 people died of the highly contagious infectious disease .
Today's Evangelical Lutheran Church in the village was built in 1686–89 in place of the old church that was destroyed by fire. The building was financed by manor owner and Dresden lawyer Adam Christoph Jacobi (1638–1689).
Viticulture was practiced until the 19th century . The annual yield was around 1200 barrels. The winemaking tradition dates back to the 17th century. In 1661 , the Roitzschberg was a manor with 4 wineries . Today the small Kegelberg harbors a botanical rarity with larger occurrences of the wild tulip ( Tulipa silvestris ) and the real cowslip ( Primula veris ).
Gröbern, which previously formed a community with Jessen since 1965, has been part of the Niederau community since 1994.
There are many farms along the state road and around the church. On the local roads to Ockrilla , Niederau and Jessen there are mostly single and two-family houses.
