Neighboring communities
The district town of Meißen borders in the south-west of the municipality, counterclockwise the municipalities Weinböhla , Moritzburg , Ebersbach , Priestewitz and Diera-Zehren join. The cities of Coswig , Radebeul and Dresden follow one after the other to the southeast .

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Oberau was incorporated.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Niederau station has the second oldest surviving Bahnhofs- reception building of Germany (completed on April 1, 1842), it has long been the oldest station building in Germany in operation. The station is on the Leipzig – Dresden railway line , which ran through the 513 m long Oberau tunnel here until 1933 . From Niederau train station there are regular train connections to Dresden , Riesa and Leipzig .
In addition to this railway line, the Berlin – Dresden railway line also runs through the town . However, there is no passenger train stop in the municipality at this point.
State road 80 , which connects Meißen and Weinböhla , runs through the village . There is a regular bus service to these two places. The Dresden airport is by the state road 81 to reach that leads also by the municipality.
