Granada is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Meta in Colombia . Granada is the seat of the diocese of Granada en Colombia , which became a diocese in 1999.

Granada is located in Meta , in the Ariari region , 80 km from Villavicencio and 180 km from Bogotá at an altitude of 332  m above sea level. NN . The area of ​​the municipality is mostly flat, characterized by the Río Ariari , savannahs and Tali . The municipality borders on San Martín to the north, Lejanías and El Castillo to the west, San Martín and Fuente de Oro to the east and Fuente de Oro and San Juan de Arama to the south .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area of ​​today's Granada was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Guayupe , Sae and Operigua , who subsequently suffered from imported diseases that killed many indigenous people. The area was then settled in search of rubber , quinine, and wood . Granada was initially a settlement called Boquemonte , which had the status of a caserío (homestead) from 1940 and received a police inspection in 1948. The region was particularly populated from the highlands in the 1950s and 1970s. Since 1956, Granada has had the status of a municipality and its current name, initially as Nueva Granada .

The main industries in Granada are agriculture and large-scale cattle production , with the cultivation of rice , corn , oil palm , cocoa , cassava , sugar cane for panela , papaya , passion fruit and citrus plants in particular .
