Grandma's Marathon is a marathon in the USA that has been held annually in June since 1977. The route runs from Two Harbors , Minnesota on Scenic Route 61 along the shores of Lake Superior to Duluth . There the run ends not far from the Aerial Lift Bridge in Canal Park .

history

The marathon was first held in 1977. The winner of the first race, in which 150 runners took part, was the Olympian Garry Bjorklund from Duluth . It was named after Grandma's Restaurant , which had newly opened in Duluth and sponsored the run with 600 US dollars. This resulted in a marathon with up to 9,500 participants annually and, with a budget of around two million US dollars, represents an important economic factor in the region.

In addition to the marathon, there is also a competition for wheelchair users, a half marathon, a 5000 meter run and a competition for children. There are a total of around 15,000 participants in the competitions each year.

In 2009, 5851 runners finished the marathon, 5604 the half marathon. The prize money for the winners was US $ 10,000 (marathon), US $ 2,000 (wheelchair marathon) and US $ 1,500 (half marathon) plus time bonuses.
