The Great and Little Sta. Cruz Islands Protected Landscape / Seascape is located in the province of Zamboanga del Sur off the southern cape of the Zamboanga Peninsula , the large western peninsula of Mindanao Island , in the Philippines . It was established by Presidential Decree No. 271 on April 23, 2000 on and around the islands of Great and Little Sta. Cruz set up. Both belong to the administrative area of the city of Zamboanga City . The Great and Little Sta. Cruz Islands Protected Landscape / Seascape is a combined nature reserve and marine reserve . It covers an area of 1,877 hectares and a peripheral buffer zone with 1,548 hectares . The islands can be reached via ferry connections.
The Sta. Cruz Islands are among the major tourist destinations in the region. In 2011, it was announced that the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority gave the Zamboanga City Municipality their approval to develop both islands into a destination for premium ecotourists. For this purpose, an architectural study was commissioned, which future new buildings must be based on. 20 million Philippine pesos were allocated to the project.
