Gregor Margari Gharibjan ( Armenian Գրիգոր Մարգարի Ղարիբյան , Russian Григорий Маркарович Гарибян ; born December 13, 1924 in Tbilisi , † June 8, 1991 in Yerevan ) was an Armenian - Soviet physicist and university professor .

Life

Gharibjan, the son of a doctor, attended school in Baku , where his family had moved. When the brothers Abram Alichanow and Artem Alichanjan searched for protons as the third component of cosmic rays on the Aragaz in 1942 , Gharibjan became enthusiastic about physics . After graduating from school in 1943, he studied at the physics faculty of Lomonosov University in Moscow , graduating in 1948. He then became head of the laboratory of the Yerevan Physics Institute. In 1952 he received his doctorate as a candidate in physical-mathematical sciences . His main focus was on quantum electrodynamics , astrophysics , the physics of cosmic rays and the passage of charged particles through matter. He was particularly influenced by IJ Pomeranschuk . Gharibjan investigated theoretically the electron bremsstrahlung , the radiation of relativistic electrons electron positron - pair formation and - Annihilation and the movement of stars and nebulae in the magnetic field . In 1959 he experimentally demonstrated the transition radiation predicted in 1945 by WL Ginsburg and IM Frank . He showed that the energy released depends linearly on the Lorentz factor of the electrical charge .

In 1961 Gharibjan received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . In 1963 he became a Corresponding Member and in 1971 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic . In 1973 he was appointed professor.
