Gregor Müller O.Cist. (* August 24, 1842 in Baden , Canton Aargau as Rudolf Müller ; † January 2, 1934 in Mehrerau , Vorarlberg ) was an Austrian religious priest , editor and historian of Swiss origin.

Life

Rudolf Müller, born in Baden in Aargau, son of Jakob Müller and Anna Herzog, entered the Cistercian Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau as a novice in 1861 after attending school in Baden and Mehrerau . He took the religious name Gregor and made his profession the following year . He then studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Einsiedeln and Mehrerau, he was solemnly professed in 1865 and ordained a priest in 1866.

In direct succession, Father Gregor Müller taught German and French at the private high school in Mehrerau , and he was also entrusted with the duties of the Abbot and Chapter Secretary. In 1872 he took over the management of the monastery as a large waiter. In 1888 he was installed as prior , an office he held until 1895.

In 1889, Father Gregor Müller founded the monthly magazine Cistercienser Chronik with the consent of Abbot Maurus Kalkum . The editor who worked there developed alongside Father Leopold Janauschek to become the leading historian of the order of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In numerous contributions, Father Müller dealt in particular with the beginnings of the order, its traditions and outstanding members. His " Studies on the General Chapter" , which comprise almost 400 pages, appeared in Cistercienser Chronik 12 (1900) to 20 (1908) of lasting importance . Pope Leo XIII paid tribute to him for his services to the Cistercian Chronicle . with the award of the silver cross of honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .
