Gregor Schell

Gregor Christian Schell (born June 1, 1957 in Düsseldorf ; † July 14, 2019 in Göttingen ) was a German publisher and author .

Life

Gregor Schell grew up in an artistic family. The father, Hermann Schell, had studied art and architecture at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf as a pupil of Ewald Mataré together with Ivo Beucker and Joseph Beuys , the brother Andreas Schell was a musician and played a. a. with Klaus Dinger at La Düsseldorf . Schell attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Düsseldorf until he graduated from high school, he studied at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . Gregor Schell later married the artist Heike Laufenburg and moved to Willebadessen , where he lived and worked with three children.

Schell founded the publishing house Schell / Scheerenberg in 1977, in which he, as a school friend , printed and published the first book by the poet Thomas Kling , "The State of Fall". A short time later he renamed the publisher to "Verlag Gregor Schell" and founded the art and literary magazine "Zwiebelzwerg" with various young artists, but primarily with Thomas Kling, in which he later worked with many writers and others. a. published together with Manfred Peter Hein and Andreas F. Kelletat. In 1980 he founded the "Zwiebelzwerg Company Verlagsgesellschaft", of which he was a partner and managing director in the following years.

From 1979 he was publisher and technical director of the "Düsseldorfer Musikzeitung", which primarily works with musicians from the new German scene in Düsseldorf (including ZK (band) ), Hagen (including Inga Humpe ) and Cologne (including BAP ) tried to open up the scene and wanted to be a mouthpiece for the musicians. Under him, the magazine also worked with avant-garde musicians from the folk and jazz scene (including from Moers Festival ).

From 1980 to 1985, Schell was editor and editor of "Caspar, magazine for peace with children". There he worked with various social scientists, u. a. with Hans A. Pestalozzi . The magazine actively campaigned for children's rights and worked with Ekkehard von Braunmühl , among others . From 1985 he took over the publishing house as a sole proprietorship under the name of Zwiebelzwerg Verlag and has been running it since then.

In 1987 he wrote and published the youth novel Tohuwabohus Tanz im Kopf together with Heike Laufenburg . The third edition was published in 2006 (15,000 copies). After the first edition appeared, it was published as a book for the blind by the Deutsche Blindenstudienanstalt. In 1995 the title was chosen as the book of the week by Neue Westfälische . As editor he was responsible for a book series with anthologies together with the artist Heike Laufenburg. 50 different titles have now appeared.

Between 2007 and 2012 Schell edited a 30-volume book series with Turkish sagas for children and adults in collaboration with Necati Demir (Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey) and Ibrahim Özbakir (Cumhuruyiet University Sivas, Turkey).
