The Great Kokshaga ( Russian Большая Кокшага ( Bolschaja Kokschaga ); Mari Кугу Какшан ) is a 297 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .

description

The Great Kokshaga rises about 2 km northeast of the Kokschaga settlement in the southwest of Kirov Oblast near the border with Nizhny Novgorod Oblast . From there it flows very curvy in a southerly direction through sparsely populated area. Around 20 km northwest of Yoshkar-Ola it reaches the Republic of Mari El .

After the confluence of the Great Kundysch , its largest tributary, it turns for a few kilometers to the southeast before flowing again to the south. 5 km northwest of its confluence with the Volga, it passes under the Vyatka highway . Across from Mariinsky Posad , it finally reaches the Volga, which is dammed up to form the Kuibyshev reservoir , which forms the border between the republics of Mari El and Chuvashia .

The Great Kokschaga is frozen from the beginning of November to April. In Mari El the river flows through the Sapowednik (nature reserve) Great Kokshaga .
