The Große Mühl is an orographically left tributary of the Danube in the western granite and gneiss highlands in Upper Austria . The official Bavarian name and the dialectal name of the river in Upper Austria is Michel or Michelbach . Together with the Kleine Mühl and the Steinernen Mühl , the Große Mühl gives its name to the region of Upper Austria north of the Danube, the Mühlviertel .

The source is located in the Bohemian Forest on German territory on the Upper Austrian-Bavarian-Czech border at an altitude of about 1,260 m. After crossing over to Austrian territory, the river, passing the Aigen market , flows along the southern foot of the Bohemian Forest until it merges with the Steinerne Mühl at Markt Haslach and turns south. Now it is used as a drive means for some small power plants. After a river length of 70 kilometers and about 1000 meters of altitude covered, the Große Mühl flows into the Danube near Untermühl (municipality of St. Martin im Mühlkreis ).

The upper course is relatively natural and lies in the Natura 2000 area Bohemian Forest-Mühltäler .

In Neufelden is the flow in the reservoir Langhalsen for the first Austrian power plant, the storage power plant Partenstein , dammed. As a result, from the Langhalsen reservoir to the Partenstein power station, the Große Mühl carries residual and / or overwater or high water. This amount of water is increased by smaller flowing streams. The last section of the river below the power plant, about one kilometer to the Danube, is backed up by the Aschach run-of-river power plant . The Große Mühl has a high water quality (levels 1–2) and an average flow rate of 8.8 m³ per second in the upper reaches.

The picturesque river valley between Neufelden and the confluence with the Danube, in the Upper Danube Valley just below the Schlögener Schlinge , is popular as a hiking destination. The headwaters at Dreisessel , the Torf-Au near Ulrichsberg and the hillside forests in the valley of the Große Mühl near Kleinzell in the Mühlkreis are nature reserves . The Zwettlbach joins on the left . Freshwater pearl mussels , otters , beavers , dipper , kingfisher , gray heron , goosander , eagle owl , white stork ( Haslach an der Mühl ) and the black stork ( Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald ) live in and around the Große Mühl .
