The Nettgau large stone grave is a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic deep-engraving ceramic culture near Nettgau , a district of Jübar in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel , Saxony-Anhalt .

location

The facility is located 2 km north of Nettgau in a field, directly on the boundary with Gladdenstedt .

Research history

The grave was first described by Johann Friedrich Danneil in 1843 . In the 1890s, Eduard Krause and Otto Schoetensack carried out a new survey of the great stone graves of the Altmark. In 2003-04, all remaining large stone graves in the Altmark were recorded and measured as a joint project of the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt , the Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum in Salzwedel and the association “Young Archaeologists of the Altmark”.

description

The grave belongs to the large dolmen type . The burial mound is irregularly oval. Johann Friedrich Danneil could no longer make out a grave border during his investigations in 1843. It is possible, however, that two stones south of the burial chamber originally belonged to an enclosure. The burial chamber is oriented east-northeast-west-southwest. It originally consisted of eleven bearing stones, all of which have been preserved, and probably four cap stones, three of which have survived. One of the capstones fell into the burial chamber. There is also the third stone, preserved only in fragments. Another fragment lies outside the chamber. The largest capstone measures 2.5 m × 1.9 m × 0.8 m. The burial chamber is rectangular and has internal dimensions of 5.3 m × 1.5 m, its height is 0.8 m.

The Nettgau large stone grave in regional legends

In the Altmark there is a regional legend that refers to the grave. Next to the grave there was once a stone known as the "witch stone". The legend reports that a beekeeper and his son with their team passed the Hexenstein when suddenly the horse stopped and did not want to go any further. They were amazed to find that it had a foal. However, it suddenly kicked out and fatally hit the boy in the head. As a memorial, the beekeeper then had the hoof of a horse and a foal and a cross carved into the stone. However, this stone seems to have long since disappeared, as Danneil did not find it any more in 1843.
