Gudmund Nyeland Brandt

Gudmund Nyeland Brandt (born March 17, 1878 in Frederiksberg , † April 30, 1945 in Ordrup ) was a Danish gardener and landscape architect . He designed gardens of all kinds, including cemeteries, playgrounds and public green spaces. His factual style was committed to (urban) planning and gardening practicality.

Origin and education

Brandt was the son of Peter Brandt (died 1918), a commercial gardener , and his wife Anne (née Nyeland , died 1918). Brandt attended high school in Ordrup. After an apprenticeship in a nursery in Valby from 1899 to 1901 he continued his education outside Denmark: 1901 and 1902 he lived in England , 1903 in Paris on ( Jardin des Plantes ) . He returned to Denmark and from 1906 worked as a gardener for the Gentofte local government .

From 1906 (until 1914) Brandt also had his own planning office. In 1906 and 1907 he was editor of the gardening magazine Gartnertidende . In 1909 he married Gerda Petersen (1880–1941), daughter of a commercial gardener. Brandt carried out garden design tasks of all kinds: villa gardens, sports and playgrounds, grave designs, allotment gardens and simple greening in residential areas.

Brandt was contemporary as a renewer of Danish garden architecture in the wake of Henrik August Flindt . In Germany , among others, Ferdinand Tutenberg developed comparable design solutions.

Projects (selection)

In addition, Brandt published a book on perennial plants ( Stauder, en Vejledning for Havevenner) in 1915 , which had three editions and wrote articles for specialist journals. He taught garden art from 1924 to 1941 at the School of Architecture at the Art Academy in Copenhagen. In 1929 he became a knight of Dannebrog . He was awarded the Eckersberg Medal in 1937 for the design of Mariebjerg Kirkegård and the CF Hansen Medal in 1945. Brandt was buried in the Ordrup cemetery after his death in 1945.
