Guillermo García Calvo (born August 4, 1978 in Madrid ) is a Spanish conductor . He conducted at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin , the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera . In his home country Spain he performed a. a. at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, ​​the Teatro Real and the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and at the Oviedo Opera . At the beginning of the 2017/2018 season he was appointed General Music Director of the Chemnitz Theater and Chief Conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic . Since January 1st, 2020 he has also been musical director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid .

Career

Guillermo García Calvo was born in Madrid in 1978. He began his musical education at the age of 7 with piano lessons. He completed a music degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with a thesis on Parsifal and the performance of the Tannhäuser Overture in the Great Hall of the Vienna Music Association . From 2001 to 2002 he was assistant to Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. In summer 2007 he worked for Christian Thielemann on the production of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival .

García Calvo has had a close relationship with the Vienna State Opera since 2002 , for which he directed the musical preparation of over fifty opera works and conducted more than 200 performances.

He made his debut as an opera conductor in 2003 with Hansel and Gretel at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater . In December 2009 he represented Daniele Gatti in a new performance of Macbeth at the Vienna State Opera . He made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with La Cenerentola . In January 2016 he made his debut at the Opera di Firenze with the orchestra Maggio Fiorentino and the performance of Goyescas by Enric Granados and El amor brujo by Manuel de Falla . In April of the same year he performed for the first time at the Palais Garnier in Paris . In May 2016 he was appointed director of the modern revival of the opera Elena e Malvina by Ramon Carnicer with the Orquesta y Coros Nacionales de España .

In 2016 he was appointed General Music Director of the Chemnitz Theater and Chief Conductor of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic . Since taking office in the 2017/2018 season, García Colvo has given the works of Richard Wagner an important place in the repertoire. He staged a. a. the four-part opera The Ring of the Nibelung new. One of the operas, namely Götterdämmerung, received the Faust in 2019 for best direction in music theater.

In addition to the aforementioned functions, he conducts operas and concerts in other concert halls. He directed Siegfried (at the Oviedo Opera ), for which he was awarded the Ópera XXI Prize for the best musical direction of the 2017/2018 season, Katiuska by Pablo Sorozábal (at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid), La Gioconda ( Gran Teatre del Liceu ), for which he received the Amics del Liceu's Prize for Best Musical Direction, L'elisir d'amore (at the New National Theater in Tokyo ) or Don Giovanni (at the Paris Opera ).

In December 2019, his appointment as musical director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid was announced from January 1, 2020.
