Gustaf Adolf Jakob Neumann (* 1924 in Grieskirchen ( Upper Austria ); † February 18, 2013 in Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria ) was an Austrian publisher and journalist .

Life

Neumann attended the Dachsberg Mission School from 1934 to 1938 , then the upper school in the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster and in the Schottengymnasium Vienna, where he passed the Matura . According to his own statements, Neumann published poems in the following years and in 1945 founded a publishing house with the name Hausruck ; in the same year he founded Echo der Heimat . In 1949 and 1950 Neumann was co-founder and chairman of the Association of Independents .

In the mid-1950s, the magazine became Austria's largest weekly newspaper, primarily through a campaign for innocent convicts - of which 13 could be rehabilitated. A total of 13 were rehabilitated through his efforts, including Rudolf Rechberger , Josef Auer and Hubert Ranneth . In 1965, after years of efforts, he obtained, among other things, the release of Erich Rebitzer , a student who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for three murders 17 years earlier, from the Stein penal institution near Vienna.

From the 1960s onwards, Neumann was friends with Leo Wallner and with him founded the forerunner of Casinos Austria .

In 1969 Neumann met with the Swiss doctor Hans Martin Sutermeister (who at that time was “in the political crossfire”), who called him “a determined fighter against legal errors”. Sutermeister wanted to set up a "Foundation for the Uncovering of Legal Errors in Switzerland, the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria" with the name of last instance and seat in the Principality of Liechtenstein with the aim of clearing up "as many legal errors of recent times". "In Neumann, the spiritual father of the law passed some time ago in the Austrian Parliament on full compensation for illegally acquired imprisonment (" Lex Neumann ") [wanted] Dr. Sutermeister have found the right employee. ”Sutermeister mentioned him several times in his Summa Iniuria: A pitaval of errors of justice .

Since 1976 Neumann published the Kleine Klosterneuburger Zeitung , today the Kleine Klosterneuburger-Tullner-Korneuburger Zeitung . From 1986 to 1997 Neumann was chairman of the local citizens' association "Livable Weidlingtal", after which he was honorary chairman. In 1991 Neumann became President of Casinos Austria International Holding Ges.mbh. Neumann also founded the Animal Rights Foundation . He was awarded the title of "Professor" and the great gold medal for services to the federal state of Lower Austria . Since 2007 he has been Honorary President of the Supervisory Board of Casino Austria International Holding Ges.mbh .

According to Erwin Pröll , Neumann was a “passionate newspaper man with brain, heart and ambition” and “doyen of Austrian journalism ”.

Gustaf Adolf Neumann was buried in the Weidlinger Friedhof . Business IT specialist Gustaf Neumann is his son.
