Gustav Huguenin (born July 21, 1840 in Krauchthal ; † February 6, 1920 in Zurich ; resident in Zell and Zurich) was a Swiss psychiatrist , neurologist , internist and entomologist .

Life

The son of a doctor attended secondary school in Winterthur and studied natural sciences and medicine at the universities of Zurich , Prague and Vienna . His teachers were in Zurich Wilhelm Griesinger , Anton Biermer , Bernhard von Gudden , Theodor Billroth and Eduard von Rindfleisch and in Vienna Theodor Meynert , Moriz Benedikt and Johann von Oppolzer . Huguenin received his doctorate in Zurich in 1865.

In the summer semester of 1867 he completed his habilitation at the University of Zurich, where in the winter semester of 1872/73 he was appointed full professor of psychiatry and director of the Burghölzli insane asylum as successor to Gudden . From the winter semester 1874/75 to the summer semester 1883 he was professor of internal medicine and director of the medical clinic at the cantonal hospital in Zurich.

In 1883 he resigned because of a tubercular illness . But he continued to practice, u. a. in Weissenburg in the Simmental , but also in Algeria, Corsica and Italy, and dedicated himself to research into tuberculosis. Huguenin also dealt with entomology and left a large collection to the Entomological Museum of the ETH Zurich .
