Gustav Rebling
Gustav Rebling (born July 10, 1821 in Barby ; † January 9, 1902 in Magdeburg ) was a German composer and conductor .
Life
He initially received lessons from his father Friedrich, the cantor at the town church in Barby. After attending Friedrich Schneider's music school in Dessau from 1836 to 1839, he settled in Magdeburg as a teacher for singing and pianoforte. Until 1853 he was also organist at the small French Reformed Church, from 1847 to 1855 he also taught at the teachers' college. In 1854 he succeeded Johann Joachim Wachsmann as conductor of the cathedral choir and singing teacher at the cathedral high school in Magdeburg . In 1846 he founded the Kirchengesang-Verein, in 1862 he took over the men's choir Second Song Table. Both soon belonged to the more efficient German choirs, which showed themselves to be able to cope with any demanding composition in Magdeburg concerts, at music festivals and on concert tours. Rebling always refused to follow outside calls.
Rebling was one of the most important choir educators and conductors of his time. First in association with August Gottfried Ritter and Julius Mühling , after their death alone, Rebling was the musical authority that determined Magdeburg's musical life in the second half of the 19th century. The impressive list of all the works performed by the Church Choral Society from 1846 to 1896 testifies to his daring commitment to contemporary choral music at the time. In 1856 the choir sang Beethoven's 9th Symphony at the Magdeburg Music Festival under the direction of Franz Liszt. The contribution of the choir to the laying of the foundation stone of the Bayreuth Festival Hall on May 22, 1872 became significant in terms of music history . Rebling worked in the Magdeburg Tonkünstler-Verein, belonged to the Society for Music Research and, since its founding in 1861, was a board member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Musikverein . In 1856 he was appointed Royal Music Director and in 1896 Professor. He was a member of the Magdeburg Freemason Lodge Ferdinand for happiness .
