Gustav Steiner

Gustav Steiner (born October 2, 1878 in Basel ; † May 29, 1967 there , reformed , resident in Basel) was a Swiss educator and historian .

Life

Gustav Steiner, son of the bookbinder Karl Eduard Steiner and Maria née Winkler, devoted himself to studying German and history at the University of Basel after graduating from high school . He joined the Zofingia in 1897 . After completing the secondary teacher examination, he was initially a teacher at the boys' secondary school in Basel from 1902 to 1903. He then continued his studies in Paris and Basel until he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . From 1909 he was employed as a German and history teacher at the upper secondary school and from 1931 to 1941 at the mathematical and natural science grammar school in Basel , in the establishment of which he played a key role.

In addition, Steiner was scientifically committed as a historian and literary scholar. In the 1920s and 1930s he edited the correspondence of Peter Ochs and provided the three volumes with extensive introductions, which offered the most comprehensive overview of Ochs' life and work up to that point. He also chaired the New Year's Gazette Commission in Basel, was editor of the Basler Jahrbuch from 1936 to 1964 and, from 1932 to 1965, guild master for the Golden Star . Steiner wrote works on the French Revolution , Helveticism , mediation , the liberation of the Basel landscape in 1798, Basel guild and city history, as well as Gottfried Keller . His estate is in the Basel-Stadt State Archives .

Gustav Steiner was married to Auguste, the daughter of the music teacher Hermann August Trost. With her he had the son Peter Steiner-Mangold (* 1907; † 1980) - he was a doctor and headed the health department from 1965 to 1972.
