Gustav Vulpius

Gustav Friedrich Adolph Vulpius (born June 9, 1839 in Boxberg , † August 5, 1917 in Heidelberg ) was a German pharmacist . He was one of the best-known pharmaceutical and scientific writers of the late 19th century.

Life

After Gustav Vulpius in Stuttgart , the school had visited, he began 1853 in Langensteinbach (Carlsbad) its pharmaceutical teaching. Four years later he passed the assistant examination in Karlsruhe . He then worked as an assistant in Bruchsal , Biel and Neuveville . He studied pharmacy in Heidelberg , helping out in his father's pharmacy during the winter months . After taking the state examination in Karlsruhe, he became the manager of his father's pharmacy. He bought it in 1866, but sold it again 6 years later.

In 1872 Vulpius moved to Heidelberg . Here he worked at the Pharmaceutical Archives and the Pharmaceutical Newspaper . In 1875 he received his doctorate in Jena to the Dr. phil. In 1876 an academic hospital was built in Heidelberg. Here Vulpius took over the establishment and management of the hospital pharmacy until 1901.

Vulpius published much of his work and research results in the new "Yearbook of Pharmacy" and in the "Archive of Pharmacy". This includes his work on the detection of mercury in urine, the testing of ferrum reductum, the formation of sublimate in calomel powders and the isolation of the condurangin from the condurango bark.

Vulpius was also a member of the German Pharmacists' Association. A permanent pharmacopoeia commission was set up through him. As a result, he shifted his work to the pharmacopoeia and the first edition of the "Supplement to the German Pharmacopoeia " was published. Vulpius also took part in the editing of the "Real Encyclopedia of All Pharmacy".
