Guy Veloso

Guy Veloso (born Guy Benchimol de Veloso on October 22, 1969 in Belém , Pará ) is a Brazilian documentary photographer and professor.

Career

Veloso was born in Belém in 1969 and works there today. He studied law at the Universidade da Amazônia in Pará until 1991 .

Guy Veloso has been a photographer since 1989. His works are part of the collections of various institutions, including the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America at the University of Essex , the Centro Português de Fotografia in Porto, Portugal, the Museo De Las Americas in Denver, USA, and the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Arte Moderna in São Paulo and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo .

In 2003 he published the book Via Láctea - Pelos Caminhos de Compostela about his experiences on the Camino de Santiago .

In 2005 he started working as a curator .

In Germany, Veloso exhibited his work in 2007 at Leica in Solms.

His projects were u. a. Shown in 2010 at the 29th Biennale of São Paulo , Brazil, and in 2017 at the 4th Biennale of the Americas in Denver, USA.

In 2011 he was the curator for Brazilian contemporary photography at the 23rd Europalia Arts Festival in Brussels, Belgium. In 2012 he was involved in a book on photography in Brazil by Boris Kossoy and Lilia Schwarcz. In 2017 he published the book Guy Veloso with texts by Eder Chiodetto.

Veloso holds lectures and workshops and publishes.

The main subject of his work is religious customs and ceremonies both in Brazil and abroad. These include, for example, pilgrimages on the Camino de Santiago in Spain and photographs of Sathya Sai Baba and the 14th Dalai Lama .

The project Penitentes: Dos Ritos de Sangue à Fascinação do Fim do Mundo from 2012, on which Veloso worked for eight years, deals with 118 different religious communities from all regions of Brazil.

The Êxtase series combines images from Catholicism and the Brazilian religion Umbanda .
