The Mariengarden grammar school (official name: Mariengarden grammar school - private grammar school of the Hünstelder Oblaten in Borken-Burlo ) is a state-recognized grammar school founded in 1917 in the Burlo district of Borken and sponsored by the Huenfeld Oblaten (Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, OMI).

The high school attaches great importance to personal development and the teaching of Christian values. The grammar school has earned a nationwide reputation, particularly through sustained success in various competitions.

history

Mariengarten's roots go back to 1220, when a small chapel was built in Groß-Burlo . In 1245 Wilhelmites took over the chapel and began to expand the facilities into the monastery . In 1398 the monastery was first mentioned in a document under the name Mariengarden . The associated church is dedicated to Our Lady. In the middle of the 15th century, the Wilhelmites joined the Cistercians . After the monastery almost came to a standstill due to the Anabaptist movement and wars , it flourished again in the middle of the 17th century. In 1718 the monastery was expanded further, giving it its present form. In 1803 the monastery was dissolved as a result of secularization .

In 1917 the missionaries Oblates of the Immaculate Mary became aware of the monastery complex, which was owned by Prince Alfred zu Salm-Salm . After lengthy and major renovations , the Oblates were officially recognized as a private school in 1924 . In 1921 43 sextans moved from St. Karl to Burlo. In 1927 the school now had a wide range of subjects, including Latin , drawing , French , Greek , works as well as orchestra and singing . Up to 1935 the number of pupils increased more and more, but then fell rapidly. The school was inevitably closed at Easter 1940.

In 1946 the school reopened. With 55 students and two fathers as teachers, the school restart was more successful than expected. In 1958, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs in Düsseldorf approved the restructuring of the school structure : the grammar school became a state-recognized Progymnasium . In 1964, an interim balance sheet was drawn up, with which the school operators were satisfied, as more than 130 priests had emerged from the function of the religious school . After eleven years as a Progymnasium, the type of school was changed again: Mariengarden was recognized by the Düsseldorf Ministry of Education in 1969 as an official full high school. A year later, a new boarding school was opened in 1970.

In 1972, the first eleven high school graduates passed their school-leaving exams. Two trends emerged from 1974 onwards : While the number of students continued to rise, the number of interns continued to decline . In 1978 20 girls were accepted into one of the sixths for the first time and taught together with the boys. In 1980, 520 pupils attended the school, but only 50 of them were boarding school visitors. In 1984 the boarding school was closed and the rooms were rededicated as a conference venue. In 1996, the school had to turn away students for the first time after 130 registrations. 770 pupils attended the school in the 2007/08 school year. In the school year 2012/13, the classes in grade 5 were set up in four classes for the first time.

On March 10, 2012, the Mariengarden Forum was inaugurated, which was built on the site of the old auditorium. It houses a meeting room for the grammar school, which can also be used as a theater and concert hall, a library, the bistro for the students, the exam room, high school and middle school rooms as well as some other rooms. It was awarded the School Construction Prize NRW 2013.

A highlight in the history of the high school was the trip of the entire school community to Rome from September 25th to October 2nd, 2015 .

Religious week

In 1983 the first religious school week took place. In 2009, the largest religious school week to date took place under the motto “Mission Possible. On the way on behalf of the Lord ”. Bishop Lucio Alfert from Paraguay led the big closing service on September 5, 2009.

Awards

  • As part of the NRW student competition "bio-logisch" , the Mariengarden high school was awarded a special prize by the Minister for Schools and Further Education, along with other schools.
  • In 2009, three pupils from the grammar school were recognized as one of the best young artists in Rhineland and Westphalia at the 39th Volksbank international youth competition.
  • In 2009, a student won the Youth History Prize awarded by the Jewish Museum for her work in search of traces: The fate of Jewish families from Borken and Gemen during the Nazi era .

Controversy

In September 2018, the high school came under criticism because the school authority had forbidden the permanent employment of a trainee due to his homosexuality and the school had to withdraw a corresponding offer. The trainee stated that he wanted to marry his partner. In the opinion of the school authorities ( Hünfeld Oblaten ), this contradicts the church's conception of marriage and family. As a trainee lawyer, the man was employed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. For a permanent position an employment contract with the order would have been necessary.

As a sign against homophobia, students and teachers used the hashtag #mariengardenistbunt and showed that they did not agree with the decision of the school authorities.
