The building of today's physics center goes back to a foundation of the late Honnef businessman Otto Hölterhoff (* 1838) at the request of his wife Dorothea Elisabeth "Elly" née Böcking (* 1840) in 1897. The fortune of the childless couple was transferred to the University of Bonn . During the First World War , the Hölterhoffstift temporarily served as a hospital . In 1939 the school was closed and the building was then used as a senior citizens' home, but was already occupied by the Wehrmacht in 1940 . After the war ended, it served as refugee accommodation. From 1947 it was used again by the university. For a time the establishment of an institute for viticulture was planned, later language courses and other events were held here. Mainly, however, the building was used as a retirement home for professor widows until the 1970s.

On June 12, 1976, the Physics Center Bad Honnef was opened in the Hölterhoffstift, sponsored by the DPG. The number of events grew rapidly. In 1980, the University of Bonn signed a license agreement with the DPG as the owner. In the same year the facade and the roof were renewed and renovated. On October 5th, 1984 the building was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Bad Honnef.

In 2003, a modern lecture hall was added with funds from the DPG, the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation , the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Volkswagen Foundation . In April 2010 an extensive renovation of the monastery building was started while the building was in operation at a cost of 4.2 million euros. The goals of the renovation were to raise the standard of the guest rooms, to create barrier-free access (installation of an elevator), to supplement the fire protection concept and to improve the energy efficiency . In May 2012 the restored cellar vault, which serves as a "meeting place", was inaugurated. The renovation was completed in November 2012. From September 2014 to November 2015, the DPG had a new guest house with an underground car park built on the property facing the Meßbeuel; the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation took over the construction costs of 5.7 million euros.

The castle-like property is divided into a northern main building and a southern and smaller, so-called "school wing" and has an L-shaped floor plan. It has a large number of gables , bay windows and portals made of red sandstone , especially on the western front . The majority has been left as it was at the turn of the century, the interiors are decorated with stucco , marble and tiles. Some of this has only reappeared under newer disguises in recent years. The lecture hall extension is a modern construction with large glass surfaces. In addition to the three-and-a-half-story main building and the two-and-a-half-story school wing, there are three other buildings in the park of the physics center: a gardener's house, a stable building - both of which are solid construction - and a guest house.

Todays use

The DPG organizes a large number of conferences, congresses and seminars in the physics center. There are also summer schools for students, advanced training events for teachers, expert committees and other events. The main house also offers overnight accommodation: 21 single and 32 double rooms are available. There is also a guest house with 40 single rooms. The Wilhelm-und-Else-Heraeus-Lecture Hall, named after Wilhelm Heinrich Heraeus and his wife, has a capacity of 100–150 people, and there are also smaller lecture halls for 60 and 30 people. Both the German Physical Society and the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors and the Elly Hölterhoff-Böcking Foundation of the University of Bonn have their headquarters here.

The physics center is also a branch of the Bad Honnef registry office ; The library, the winter garden, the Heraeus room or a seminar room are used as wedding rooms.
