particularities Eagle figure as a remnant of a monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I on the summit

The Hübichenstein near Bad Grund in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony is a limestone rock with double peaks in the western part of the Harz Mountains . Its two interconnected pinnacles are remnants of coral reefs . Of the needles, however, only the higher one, which protrudes almost 50 m above the surrounding area, is usually associated with Hübichenstein. On the summit ( 448.5  m above sea  level ) there is a bronze eagle figure as a remnant of a monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I.

Geographical location

The Hübichenstein is located within the Upper Harz in the western part of the Harz Nature Park . It is located about 1.1 km (as the crow flies ) north of the center of the core town of Bad Grund , directly southwest of the Harzhochstraße ( B 242 ). To the east the landscape leads over to the Iberg ( 562.6  m ) and to the south to the Königsberg ( 448.5  m ). The Söse tributary Markau rises to the west of the Hübichenstein . About 1.3 km (as the crow flies) east-southeast is the entrance to the Iberg stalactite cave on Harzhochstrasse .

geology

The crags of the Hübichenstein are remnants of coral reefs . They consist for the most part of reef carbonate rocks from the upper Middle Devonian Givetium .

In geological terms, the limestone belongs to the limestone of the nearby Iberg. This is made clear, among other things, by the fact that, like on the Iberg, there are nest- shaped feldspar and limonite deposits . For this reason, there are also some pings under the Hübichenstein . Smaller caves can also be found in its limestone.

Kaiser Wilhelm I monument

In 1895, under the chairmanship of Mayor Spatzier in Bad Grund, a committee was founded to erect a memorial for Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797–1888) on the legendary Hübichenstein for the 25th anniversary of Sedan Day . A two meter high medallion image of the emperor, created by the sculptor Georg Wilhelm Bode from Wilhelmshütte, framed by laurel branches and the imperial crown above, was mounted on the towering rock . In 1897 a mighty eagle with a wingspan of three meters was placed on the top of the rock. The anniversary of the Battle of Gravelotte on August 18, 1897 is considered the day the monument was completed.

The Louis Sievert foundry in Bad Grund cast the relief and eagle. The total costs amounted to 1512.64  marks , which were raised through voluntary donations from the citizens of Bad Grund.

The monument did not survive the monarchy in Germany for long, it was deliberately destroyed. Only the eagle is preserved.

legend

A famous Harz legend reports that the Hübichenstein was the home of dwarves , gnomes and elves in the past :

The dwarf king Huebich was therefore the lord of the limestone rock. Hübich is described as an old man of short stature with coarse hair and a beard that reached down to his stomach. The legend wants to know that this beard also contained the dwarf's magical power. The friendly and kind-hearted ruler often gave silver pine cones to the poor in the region. However, people were forbidden to enter his realm. Huebich is said to have punished violations of this prohibition harshly and, for example, banished sinners. During the Thirty Years War the top of the limestone rock was shot to pieces by some soldiers. After that, Hübich was never seen again.

Hübich is still today the unofficial patron saint of the city of Bad Grund.
