geography

location

The Iberg is located within the Upper Harz in the western part of the Harz Nature Park . It is located directly north-northeast of the core town of Bad Grund , north above the Harzhochstraße ( B 242 ). In a north-northeast direction, a mountain ridge leads from the Iberg summit to the Hasenberg ( 572  m ). The entrance (approx. 420  m ) to the Iberg stalactite cave is on the south-eastern flank of the mountain  . The Hübichenstein ( 448.5  m ) rises about 1.1 km west-southwest of the mountain peak . West of Iberges rises near the Hubichenstein the Söse influx Markau and in the transition area to the southeast, pointed mountain ( 581.2  m ) of the Markau inflow Schlungwasser .

Natural allocation

Over the Iberg runs the border of the sub-units Western Harzrand (380.0) in the west and Innerstetal (380.1) in the east, which are in the natural spatial main unit group Harz (No. 38) and in the main unit Upper Harz (380) .

geology

The Iberg is a coral reef from the Givetium and Frasnium ( Devonian ) , which was formed as an atoll in the middle of the ocean, probably on a volcanic base. The reef was essentially built of corals and stromatopores . Later, on the border from the Frasnium to the Famennium , these reef-building organisms died out and reef growth ceased. During the Famennian and Lower Carboniferous , crevices were created that were filled with crinoid , brachiopod and goniatite limestone. The mountain is made entirely of limestone , so that the karstification resulted in numerous caves (including the Iberg stalactite cave).

On the northwest side of the Iberg, in the transition area to Winterberg and Heinrichsberg ( 473.6  m ), there is the Winterberg opencast mine with the Münchehof plant of Fels-Werke GmbH.

Protected areas

Parts of the Harz landscape protection area (district of Göttingen) ( CDDA no. 321403; 2000 designated; 300.112  km² in size) are located on the Iberg . The Iberg fauna-flora-habitat area is also located on the mountain (FFH No. 4127-332; 70.29  ha ).

Lookout tower, restaurant and hiking

The Iberg Albert Tower (approx.  555  m ) and an excursion restaurant are on the southwest spur of the Iberg . The tower is included in the system of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin. The Harzer Baudensteig leads past . The Iberger Kaffeehaus , also known as the Bad Grunds balcony , located in the lower area of the south-western mountain slope , was the victim of wanton arson on February 28, 2000 and has been falling into disrepair ever since.
