The Haaler Au (more rarely also called Haalerau ) is a river in Schleswig-Holstein .

course

The Au drains part of the Aukrug Nature Park area . It was originally a left (southern) tributary of the Eider . With the construction of the Kiel Canal it was cut off there. Since then, the Haaler Au has flowed into the canal. Shortly before it flows into the canal, it forms a small lake, which is separated from the canal by a bridge for the canal bank path. During the last few kilometers before it flows into this lake, a previously diked area was flooded by digging passages in the dyke on both sides of the river in order to restore a wetland in this remote area.

The Haaler Au flows through the municipality of Haale in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district , after which it was named. Tributaries include Fuhlenau , Todenbüttler Au , Pulser Mühlenau , Osterstedter Au , Papenau and Wapelfelder Au . The river is navigable in the lower reaches for rowing boats and canoes.
