Hannes Minich (born April 16, 1946 in Budweis ; † August 16, 2017 ) was an Austrian conservationist , president of the Vienna regional group of the Austrian Nature Conservation Union and retired chief forester of the city ​​of Vienna .

Life

Minich was born in Czechoslovakia to German parents. After the death of his father, at the age of 14, he and his mother moved to Austria, where he trained as a forester at the forestry school in Gainfarn and then became a Forstadjunkt in Neuwaldegg . From 1973 he became involved in the young generation of the SPÖ and in the Austrian Nature Conservation Union, and from 1974 to 1978 he headed the environmental protection department of the City of Vienna. In this function he obtained, among other things, the protection status of the arboretum of the so-called Kraus property (natural monument no. 636), and the Wienerberg pond and the surrounding area (natural monument no. 639). He also stopped numerous construction projects by prominent people in the forest and meadow belt of the city of Vienna, which ultimately brought him to a transfer as a forester to Lainz . At the same time, he rose to the position of president of the Vienna Regional Group of the Nature Conservation Union and from then on worked from this position. He actively campaigned for the protection of the Lobau , the Steinhof grounds, the Schafberg and numerous other natural treasures, most recently again for the protection of the Lobau and against the construction of the Lobau motorway. An exchange of blows by means of public letters between Hannes Minich and Friedensreich Hundertwasser about the redesign of the Spittelau waste incineration plant also caused a media stir .

Hannes Minich died of a heart attack on August 16, 2017 while hiking in the mountains . He was cremated and his urn was buried in the family grave on September 12, 2017 at the Hernals Cemetery.
