Hanns Otto Münsterer (born July 28, 1900 in Duß ( Lorraine ), † October 30, 1974 in Munich ) was a German physician , writer and folklorist .

Life

Hanns Otto Münsterer was the son of a cavalry officer in the Bavarian army . He grew up in Pasing near Munich and Augsburg and was taught by private tutors. From autumn 1917 to 1920 he had a close friendship with the young Bertolt Brecht in Augsburg ; It was during this time that Munster's first lyrical attempts were made.

From 1919 to 1924 Münsterer studied medicine in Munich and Vienna . He specialized in dermatology and made a name for himself through his research in this field. After initially working at the State Vaccination Institute in Munich, he worked from 1938 to 1945 as a senior physician at the Dermatological University Clinic in Munich. In 1942 he completed his habilitation . After 1945 he gave up his post in the hospital and settled in Munich as a dermatologist .

In the period after the Second World War , Münsterer switched to folklore research, which had interested him since his time in Augsburg. He became a specialist in amulets and folk medicine and amassed an important collection of religious folk art . From 1958 he also resumed his literary work; it emerged poems , diaries and a book about his time with Bertolt Brecht.

From Muenster's literary works (in addition to numerous poems, three novels were written in the 1930s ) only a few poems were published during the author's lifetime. While some of his texts were still read on the radio in 1932 and 1934 , the author was excluded from the “ Reichsschrifttumskammer ” in 1937 and was banned from writing . Muenster's poetry consists primarily of modern ballads that were written during his time in Augsburg and are strongly reminiscent of the early Brecht in their mixture of romanticism and anti-bourgeoisie . In later years, Münsterer wrote mostly melancholy thought poetry , which was only published after his death.
