Hans Alexis Biehler , von Biehler since 1871 (born June 16, 1818 in Berlin , † December 30, 1886 in Charlottenburg ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Hans Alexis was the son of the Berlin doctor and medical adviser Johann Friedrich Theodor Biehler (1785-1850) and his wife Luise Charlotte, née Woderb († 1867).

After completing his school education at the Köllnisches Realgymnasium , Biehler joined the Prussian Army's guards pioneer department as a pioneer on October 1, 1836 . After completing his military training at the Artillery and Engineering School , he joined the 2nd Engineer Department in 1839 and became its adjutant on March 21, 1842 . To learn the French language , Biehler was commanded from April 1, 1852 to Paris for two years and in the meantime promoted to captain on June 22, 1852 .

At the beginning of the German War , Biehler was 1st engineer officer at the General Command of the Guard Corps . In this position he was promoted to colonel on June 8, 1866 and took part in the battles at Burkersdorf and Königinhof as well as the battle at Königgrätz during the course of the war .

During the mobilization in 1870 , he was the commander of the engineers and pioneers at the High Command of the 1st Army. As major general he worked at Colombey , Gravelotte , Amiens , the Hallue , Saint-Quentin and the sieges of Metz and Verdun .

For his services, Biehler was raised to the nobility on June 16, 1871 .

From 1873 to 1884 he was chief of the engineer corps and the pioneers as well as general inspector of the Prussian fortresses. From the introduction in March 1884 appointment as general of infantry, Biehler was for health reasons with pension for the November 3, 1884 disposition while à la suite put the Corps of Engineers. On October 1, 1886, he celebrated his 50th anniversary with the company.

He died on December 30, 1886 and was buried in the garrison cemetery in Hasenheide.

Critical appraisal

Shortly after taking office as head of the engineering corps, Biehler reorganized the same and installed four engineering inspections. He was also significantly involved in the planning of the Prussian standard or schema forts , which were later categorized under the name Biehler forts .

His aptitude and his performance of office are, however, by contemporaries such. B. Hermann Frobenius strongly criticized. For the reasons mentioned above, some of his employees left the engineering corps. “The mood in the engineering corps was probably known, but no one found the courage to say goodbye to Biehler.” Ultimately, it is also due to him that the development of the tank fortifications was delayed for years.

In contrast, Kurt von Priesdorff praised Hans von Biehler for his work in the engineering corps, which he mastered with great manpower despite his health problems.
