Hans Brantzen

Hans Brantzen also Johannes Brantzen (born October 22, 1912 in Kyllburg ; † October 18, 1979 in Mainz ) was a German Roman Catholic priest , also a concentration camp prisoner in Dachau from 1941 to 1945 as well as pastor of the Mainz youth organization and pastor at the church St. Johannes Evangelist in Mainz from 1964 to 1979.

Life

John Brantzen received on January 6, 1938 Bishop Albert Stohr the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as a chaplain successively at positions in St. Stephan (Mainz) , Offenbach-Bürgel and Heusenstamm . On September 17, 1941, Kaplan Brantzen was arrested for his pastoral work and on November 7th. J. was sent to the Dachau concentration camp (prisoner number 28.603, block 26/2). In the camp he fell ill with typhus . After his liberation from the concentration camp on March 28, 1945, he was able to continue his priestly service, deeply influenced by his experiences in the camp. He kept the experiences of his internment alive and often spoke about them in his Sunday sermons.
From 1945 onwards he worked as a chaplain and at times as a parish administrator at the Church of St. Ignaz in the old town of Mainz. Afterwards as chaplain in St. Marien (Offenbach) and in Butzbach , from March 1950 the diaspora parish Nidda was assigned to him as parish curate, where he carried out the construction of the Church of Our Lady there under the most difficult conditions , which was consecrated by Bishop Albert on May 1, 1954 could be. Brantzen received the title "Pastor" in November 1954 and stayed in Nidda until 1958. It was followed from 1958 to 1964 Benefiziatsjahren in Heppenheim , where he simultaneously the local Kolping Family as Präses board. On June 1, 1964, Bishop Hermann Volk appointed Brantzen pastor of the parish of St. Johannes Evangelist in the Mainz district of Hartenberg-Münchfeld (today the parish of Don Bosco). Here, through his initiative, the parish church , rectory and kindergarten were built. His organizational talent and his ability to arouse enthusiasm helped. He also remained in constant contact with youth pastoral care as the pastor of the Mainz youth organization, was the spiritual companion of a Mainz student union in the Meielache and shaped the parish festival of his parish as a children and youth festival. He died during the funeral of a parishioner in 1979 and was buried in the Church of St. John the Evangelist on October 24th.

In Mainz , a street was named after him in the Gonsbach-Terrassen , a new residential area in Mainz-Gonsenheim .
