obituary

Hans Hugo Christian Bunte (born December 25, 1848 in Wunsiedel ; † August 17, 1925 in Karlsruhe ) was a German chemist and university professor. He held the chair for chemical technology at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and was a member of the Leopoldina .

Life

Bunte studied chemistry, physics and mathematics at the Polytechnic School in Stuttgart, continued his studies in Heidelberg and Erlangen , where he received his doctorate in 1869 under Eugen von Gorup-Besánez with the subject of studies on urea and urea derivatives . He was initially a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences at the trade school in Wunsiedel and briefly as a private assistant to Emil Erlenmeyer in Munich.

In 1872 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the TH Munich . As a gas specialist in the field of fuel and combustion technology , he gave his first lectures on tar colors , determining the calorific value and analyzing exhaust gas and luminous gas . From 1874 to 1876 he was an employee of Nikolaus Heinrich Schilling at the Munich gas lighting company and together with him developed the “Munich generator furnace” for producing gas from coal . In 1878 he took over the management of the heating research institute. Between 1879 and 1881 he laid the foundations of heating technology and modern heating management. In 1882/1883 he was elected chairman and in 1884 general secretary of the German Association of Gas and Water Experts (DVGW).

At the instigation of Carl Engler , he became full professor of chemical technology at the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1887 . In 1907, at Bunte's suggestion, the DVGW set up the teaching and experimental gas institute , or gas institute for short, which he also took over as head (today the Engler-Bunte Institute ). Ernst Terres was his assistant in the 1910s . Bunte retired in 1919.

In 1887 he invented the Bunte burette , an apparatus for gas analysis. He also found the group of Bunte salts in sulfur compounds ( thiosulfuric acid - S- esters). The technical universities in Vienna, Munich and Hanover awarded him a Dr. Ing. Hc In 1893, Bunte was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1903 to 1904, Bunte was a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly, initially appointed by the Grand Duke, and from 1905 to 1913 as a member of the Technical University in the same chamber.

His son Carl Gustav Bunte (1878–1944) later also became a chemist and professor at the TH Karlsruhe.
