Carl Gustav Bunte (born June 15, 1879 in Munich , † November 3, 1944 in Baden-Baden ) was a German chemist.

Life

The eldest son of Hans Bunte and Minna Stölzel, daughter of Carl Stölzel , was born in Munich and grew up there with a brother and three sisters. In 1887 the family moved to Karlsruhe , where Carl graduated from high school in 1897 and then served a year in the military. Strongly influenced by his father, it quickly became clear that he too should become a chemist. So he began to study in 1898: after two semesters of chemistry at the University of Leipzig under Wislicenus , he completed his diploma in 1902 with his first scientific publication Iron removal from drinking waterin Karlsruhe. His second publication followed in his doctoral thesis on uric acid derivatives , with which he successfully completed his doctorate at the University of Berlin in 1905 under Emil Fischer . He then began his professional career with a first position at the Deutsche Continental Gasgesellschaft in Dessau. There he was construction manager at the Neumühl and Frankfurt (Oder) gas works . In 1906 he married his wife from Baden, whom he had previously had to buy to Bavaria because of his Bavarian citizenship. Two years later, he followed his father's wish and joined the teaching and experimental gas institute he founded, the German Association for Gas and Water (DVGW). There he quickly took over the management and later also the position of General Secretary, which he held from 1909 to 1926. His work was interrupted by the war he went through as a lieutenant on the Eastern Front. He was awarded two medals for his achievements. During his military service, Bunte completed his habilitation in 1917 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe , which in 1920 appointed him extraordinary professor at the newly created chair for the gas industry and fuel technology. In 1933 he became a full professor . The First World War and the conditions under the Nazi regime had severely affected him and his work. In the spring of 1937 he suffered a serious heart attack . The climax of his work was passed. He died on November 3, 1944 at the age of 66 in Baden-Baden .

Scientific work

Bunte undoubtedly benefited from the reputation and strong support of his famous and influential father. At the same time, he was therefore enormously in its shadow and only gained reputation for his work late. He has documented more than 120 publications in total . Through the constant further development of the DVGW, his life's work, he became the force that shaped the development of the gas industry of his time. He gained special recognition primarily because he took part in several international congresses and exhibitions as a representative of the German gas industry and became a member of numerous important committees and other organizations . From 1909 he was co-editor and from 1920 to 1925 independent editor of the "Journal for Gas Lights " (later: GWF Das Gasfach und Wasserfach ) of the DVGW. His lectures were often overcrowded. In September 1932 he was therefore honored by his father's former students as a researcher and teacher with tireless workforce in all areas of fuel technology .
