Hans Heinrich Hattemer (born March 13, 1935 ) is a German forest scientist and geneticist . The internationally renowned scientist was a long-time professor of forest genetics and forest plant breeding at the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Live and act

Hans H. Hattemer began his scientific career at the Federal Research Institute for Forestry and Wood Management in Reinbek near Hamburg , to which he later remained very attached. In 1963 he did his doctorate at the University of Hamburg with the dissertation The reaction and the osmotic value of the needle cell sap of pine, Pinus silvestris L. , of various geographical origins in connection with their susceptibility to the Schütte Lophodermium pinastri , Schrad. Chev. to the Dr. rer. nat . With the writing Attempts to Geographical Variation in Japanese Larch he qualified as a professor at the University of Göttingen in 1968 and in the same year went to Yale University in New Haven as research and lecturer . From there he moved to the University of Stockholm as an assistant professor (Bitr. Prof.) and in 1975 accepted the chair for forest genetics and forest plant breeding at the Faculty of Forest Sciences at the University of Göttingen. This full professorship was linked to the management of the Forest Genetics and Forest Plant Breeding Department of the Institute for Forest Genetics, Forest Biometry and Computer Science in the Faculty. Due to the growing importance of the two institute departments, these were later divided into independent institutes, with Hattemer heading the Institute for Forest Genetics and Forest Plant Breeding.

Hattemer's scientific work focused on the genetic examination and monitoring of forest reproductive material as well as the search for ways to trace its origin with genetic examination methods. To this end, numerous studies were carried out under his leadership, including those on spruce and silver fir . In the course of the debate about the so-called “ forest dieback ”, Hattemer and his colleagues also investigated the effects of pollution on the genetic structures of forest trees, especially the European beech, during the 1980s .

With the forest policy and forest practice demands derived from his theses and his criticism of the provisions of the Forest Seed Act , he has triggered a series of technical debates. As a result of his decades of research, Hattemer consistently referred to genetic variation and its significance for forests and forest trees. He warned that this would be limited too much by limiting it to just a few origins. Therefore, Hattemer has always spoken out in favor of the conservation of forest genetic resources on a broad basis and gene conservation , as well as emphasizing the importance of biodiversity . With Fritz Bergmann and later Martin Ziehe, he wrote Introduction to Genetics for Forest Science Students (1987, 2nd edition 1993), a standard textbook for forest science university instruction.

In addition to numerous international research projects, Hattemer is also involved in various specialist committees, for example as chairman of the IUFRO specialist group “Genetics” and as a member of the advisory board of the Federal Research Institute for Forestry and Wood Management. In 1980 he was a co-founder of the scientific working group "Forum Genetics - Forests - Forestry", of which he has been a member since then. He is co-editor of the journals Silvae Genetica (since 1985) and Forest Genetics (since 1994). He also wrote numerous articles for these and other specialist publications. He is also a member of the editorial board of the journal Dendrobiology .

Meanwhile released, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. However, Hans H. Hattemer continues to work in Göttingen with a focus on the genetics of tropical trees. He lives in Reinhausen .
