Hans Jürgen Böhmer (* 1967 in Pegnitz ) is a German vegetation and landscape ecologist .

Life

As a student, Böhmer was already involved in projects for the conservation of ecosystems. a. 1985 as part of the planned expansion of the Main-Danube Canal. He first studied geography , political science and communication science at the Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg , after the intermediate diploma geography, biology and geology at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg .

In Erlangen, he completed in 1998 his doctoral thesis on "Vegetation dynamics in the high mountains under the influence of natural disturbances" in the framework of the German Research Foundation "highly dynamic mosaic cycle models plant communities of the Alpine region" funded (DFG) project down, then he became Habilitand in the Department of Landscape Ecology of the Department of Ecology at the Technical University of Munich .

From 2001 to 2003 he received a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation for the project “Dynamics and Invasibility of the Montane Mountain Rainforest on the Island of Hawaii ” and during this time worked as a post-doctoral student with Dieter Mueller-Dombois at the Department of Botany at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and 2002–2003 as an Affiliate Faculty at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He then received a scholarship at the Nature Conservation Research Department of the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig.

From the winter semester of 2004 he represented and established the newly created professorship for vegetation geography at the University of Bonn . In 2006 he completed his habilitation in landscape ecology at the Technical University of Munich on the long-term dynamics of tropical mountain rainforests in the Pacific region, with subsequent appointment as a private lecturer at the Department of Ecology and Ecosystem Management at the Technical University of Munich.

From 2006–2014 he was also Managing Director of the Interdisciplinary Latin America Center (ILZ), a central scientific institution at the University of Bonn. He is co-initiator of the “Competence Network Latin America”, which has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with several million euros since 2010.

In 2014, Böhmer accepted a professorship for biogeography at the Institute for Geography, Earth Science and Environment (SGESE) at the University of the South Pacific (USP), one of only two regional universities worldwide. He has been Head of School of this institute since 2015.

Böhmer repeatedly expressed doubts about the informative value of prognostic models for the behavior of plant species in the face of climate change. He was a member of the working group "Agiculture and Forestry" of the Pacific Island Development Forum (PIDF) in preparation for the UN climate conference in Paris 2015 (COP21) and is editor of the international journal Endangered Species Research (ESR).
