Hans Nicolai Sunde , also Nicolay Sunde (born September 18, 1823 in Husum , Duchy of Schleswig , † January 8, 1864 in Kiel , Duchy of Holstein ), was a German genre and portrait painter .

Life

Sunde, the physically handicapped son of the Norwegian Ohle Johannes Sunde, the captain of the Danish liner Christian VIII , and his wife Dorothea (née Storm), showed an early interest in painting. After an apprenticeship in a lithographic institute in Altona near Hamburg , he received an academic painter training in Copenhagen , Antwerp , Munich and Düsseldorf . He enrolled at the Munich Art Academy on April 25, 1847. A study visit to Düsseldorf, at that time the center of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , is documented for the year 1856.

The writer Theodor Storm , who worked as a lawyer in Husum from 1843 and belonged to the closer social circle of Sundes, was inspired by the figure of the little hunchbacked painter Edde Brunken in the 1867 novella A painter's work by Sunde . Portraits of Storm and his wife Constanze, née Esmarch (1825–1865), Sunde painted in 1857.
