Hans Thiel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Thiel (born October 27, 1919 in Hamburg ; † October 10, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German educator , Germanist , author and patron .

Life

Hans Thiel met his future wife Anneliese (born Jüngst, 1920–2008) already during his school days. He met her as a senior secondary school graduate in grade 11 on the Neroberg in Wiesbaden . Both successfully completed their Abitur.

Hans Thiel then had to do his service in the Reich Labor Service . He was then drafted into the Wehrmacht . As on 1 September 1939 with the invasion of Poland of the Second World War began, he was so badly wounded on his first day of use that he was released from active duty in the Armed Forces. The attending doctor informed him that Thiel had to assume that he would only be around forty years old due to the consequences of the wound. By being released from service in the Wehrmacht, he and his girlfriend Anneliese were able to study German at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau . Both were married in 1943 while they were still studying.

Thiel did his doctorate in Freiburg and after the war had a position as a research assistant at the German Institute of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 1950 he accepted a position as a high school teacher in Frankfurt am Main, like his wife, who worked at the Helmholtz School there . From 1944 to 1956 he was officially considered dead because the identification tag of a fallen Wehrmacht soldier was incorrectly deciphered. When this became known to him in 1956, Thiel applied for his death certificate to be deleted.

During his time at Frankfurt's model school , he worked as an author and editor to publish school books for German lessons. His eight editions Our Mother tongue was the defining language book of its time for three decades. As head of the study seminar for grammar schools in Offenbach am Main , he trained more than 80 trainee teachers in German. From 1970 to 1985 he was director of the Frankfurt Helmholtz School. During this creative phase, the specialist journal Discussion Deutsch appeared on his initiative from 1970 . He was a member of the working group that developed the basis for the 1983 German course structure plan for the State of Hesse .

In 1980, while still active as director of the Helmholtz School, Thiel became an honorary member of the Association of Former Helmholtz Students (VEH) founded in 1925 , in whose work he was actively involved until 2016. He published a series of documentary portraits of former students and teachers, including those of the school's Jewish students and teachers who were persecuted and killed by the National Socialists . He made contact with many alumni across continents, often after extensive research into their whereabouts. In addition, he published with the association a documentary on the history of the school and another on that of the association.

In 1989 the couple donated the Anneliese and Hans Thiel Fund for Peace Work , which was made available for students at the Helmholtz School who were committed to this end. The idea for this goes back to Anneliese Thiel. After ten years of activity, the fund donated its accumulated assets to a bronze plaque installed in November 1999, which refers to the persecution of Jewish students and teachers during the time of the Third Reich . It was inaugurated in the presence of Salomon Korn , a former Helmholtz student, chairman of the Jewish community in Frankfurt and vice-chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

Other activities by Thiel took him to Israel and the USA to visit German Jewish emigrants. The discussions held there led to further historical documentation, for example about the Samson-Raphael-Hirsch School in Frankfurt am Main.

Anneliese and Hans Thiel's marriage resulted in two children, Wolfgang (* 1949) and Ursula (* 1951), who also became teachers. Hans Thiel died at the age of 97, shortly before the age of 98.
