Work and ideas

Hans Werner Heymann's professorship in Siegen focused on school pedagogy and didactics . In his publications, too, he dealt in particular with mathematics didactics and mathematics lessons , which he regards as part of an "interdisciplinary general education concept".

In particular, “mathematics as a science does not give an answer to the question of which mathematics should be learned by all adolescents in which way”. The elaboration of his concept takes place from the educational theory justified, as Heymann calls it, “external point of view” and is to apply as “yardstick for the assessment and criticism of a mathematics lesson” as well as to justify the necessity of obligatory instruction for all in the respective subject. Heymann sees himself "committed to a socially scientifically enlightened hermeneutics " and joins the "tradition line of humanities education." In his concept Heymann formulates seven different, partly interlinked tasks: life preparation, foundation of cultural coherence, world orientation, instructions for the critical use of reason, Developing willingness to take responsibility, practicing understanding and cooperation as well as strengthening the student self. Although other subjects such as religion and German could tackle some tasks more directly, Heymann believes that "the specific contribution of mathematics lessons cannot be compensated for by any other subject". On the basis of the tasks, he succeeds in formulating different emphases on how a general education should be designed in comparison to conventional teaching, whereby he also sees this approach clearly more international. In addition to the tension between society, learners and mathematics, Heymann also looks at the teachers, from whom, in addition to their enthusiasm for their subject, he also demands modesty as an insight "that mathematics cannot be equally important for all students."

In 2008 Heymann advocated teaching soft skills in schools. Too little research is being done on this topic. Even in the working world that follows school, specialist knowledge and social skills such as the ability to cooperate cannot be separated and both are required. He considered Waldorf schools “exemplary” in this regard.

In 2009 he joined the criticism of specialist colleagues, including Hans Brügelmann , on the politics of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government. This planned to introduce bachelor's and master's degrees for prospective teachers, which was implemented in 2011. The criticism of the educationalists was that a meaningful reform of the teaching degree would fail due to the multitude of requirements of the Conference of Ministers of Education , and that teachers and fellow students would not be able to adequately exchange ideas in the expected large lecture halls.
